IRS to host free tax symposium Aug. 24 in Cincinnati

The IRS will host a free symposium this month that will touch on data security, problem solving and other tax-related issues.

The 2017 IRS tax Symposium will be held Aug. 24 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Scarlet Oaks Campus, 300 Scarlet Oaks Drive, Cincinnati, 45241. The conference will be held in the Scarlet IDEA Room and check-in begins at 8:30 a.m.

The event will include:

  • SB/SE Collection News: Hear the latest from collection on payment options and methods, private debt collection, updates to passport legislation and more.
  • Practitioner Data Breach: Get updates directly from Criminal Investigation on the practitioner data breach and how the IRS is working to limit the impact it has on tax professionals and IRS.
  • Individual and Business Identity Theft: Learn what the IRS is doing on tax fraud, identity theft and scams.
  • IRS Updates: Hear about current hot topics, including the Form W-2 verification code, online tools and more.
  • Problem Solving Afternoon: The Taxpayer Advocate Service will be available 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The Taxpayer Advocate Service is an independent organization within the IRS designed to protect taxpayer rights and provide free help taxpayers resolve problems they cannot resolve with the IRS.

Attendees can get four free CPE credits. Refreshments will not be provided, but you may bring a beverage and a light snack. Register by sending an email with the subject line, “Ohio Tax Symposium” to and include the following information:

Your full name as shown on your PTIN card

  1. Your email address and telephone number
  2. Your PTIN, if requesting CPE credit
  3. Indicate if you would like to talk with a Taxpayer Advocate during the afternoon session to discuss a case you are working on. (If so, you should have a valid power of attorney on file or bring your client’s signed Form 2848.)
  4. That you heard about the event via The Ohio Society of CPAs.
