Mantua, Bellefontaine, and Russia are just a few Ohio cities that seem easy enough to pronounce – if you’re an Ohio native. However, in a recent Quick Poll we asked members “what Ohio city name is the one out-of-staters mispronounce the most?”

Leading the results with 22% was Mantua, which is pronounced “MAN-away.” Mantua was closely followed by Bellefontaine, pronounced “bell-FOUN-ten,” at 17%. The remainder of the results consisted of Gallipolis (gal-a-POLICE), Berlin (BER-lyn), Lima (LYE-ma), Wooster (WUS-ter) and Bucyrus (bue-CY-rus).

We also gave the option of “other,” which yielded numerous write-in votes. Of these results, the city with the most write-ins was Russia, Ohio. Russia, which is pronounced “ROO-shee,” made up for about 5% overall.
