Each year, Columbus CEO recognizes 250 organizations with their Best of Business award voted on by their readers. And this year, two Ohio CPA Proud organizations made the list for Best Accounting Firm.

"It’s an honor," said Sara Robertson, director of market strategy at GBQ. "I always call fall 'Accounting award season.'"

Robertson, who has been with GBQ for 16 years this month, said this award is exciting because it’s voted on by the community.

“There’s a lot of awards that are based on data and you kind of know where you’re going to fall within it,” she said. “But with this one you don’t have any control over the specific recognition, so the suspense kills me. I always think it’s an honor to get this one because it’s voted on by peers and clients.”

For Robertson, one of the most rewarding aspects of working for GBQ has been watching the opportunities to grow within the firm.

“There is always a new challenge and I think it’s rewarding to have the autonomy and working with some of the best people in town.”

In addition, HW&Co also received the Best of Business recognition for Best Accounting Firm (fewer than 20 CPAs).

“It’s pretty exciting,” said Brandon Miller, CPA, CEO of HW&Co. “I think we’ve got a really good group of individuals within our office. We’ve got a good structure and some really good clients.”

Miller took over as CEO in January and introduced a ten-year strategic plan to the company.

“We’re all excited about achieving this strategic plan throughout the years and to be recognized as Best of Business continues to spur on that momentum,” he said.

Miller, who has been with HW&Co for 23 years said the most rewarding part of working there is the continual opportunity for growth.

“At each level is something new and exciting,” he said. "I’m the person who likes a new challenge. That’s one thing within our firm I’ve talked about is there’s going to be more opportunity for you.”

Miller also said part of their tagline is “Conversations that change everything,” and a major aspect of this is listening.

“We’re constantly listening to our clients and trying to find some sort of solution that helps foster those relationships,” he said.

In addition, Miller said he’s appreciative of the people within the firm as well as the clients and those with whom they work.

“I think we have an enormous amount of talent. We’re all educating and learning from each other – that’s what makes our firm what it is,” he said. “We couldn’t be as strong as we are today without them.”
