OSCPA is introducing a new resource to help students kickstart their careers. “LAUNCH” combines all job and internship opportunities into one resource for students to navigate at their convenience, said Christian Dawe, senior accounting student at The Ohio State University.
Dawe, who is also a student ambassador for The Ohio CPA Foundation, has dedicated part of his college career to helping younger accounting students find their professional career path. Being a student ambassador helped him to do so.
If I can help any accounting majors younger than me get on the right path to being ready for their professional careers, I appreciate that opportunity. It’s something I love being a part of,” he said.
In addition, Dawe even took it upon himself to provide his own insight into LAUNCH through his YouTube page, Christian the CPA, where he provides videos to help students navigate the program.
“I just thought that people who are going to use (LAUNCH) should know how to use it to take full advantage of it,” he said. “By breaking it down and walking through it I think people will know how to better use it to fit whatever criteria that they want.”
Dawe originally started creating videos as a hobby, and through a trial and error process, he taught himself how to craft these videos using iMovie.
“I made videos first because I think it might be a good way to distribute the information in a concise way,” he said. “Nowadays it’s hard to have people sit at their computers for a long time. So, videos allow me to give them the quick information they need.”
Dawe interned for BDO last spring and will return to their Columbus branch after graduation.
In addition, he offers advice to students who are going through this process.
“For landing a job post-graduation, I think you should just put yourself out there,” he said. “Contact firms that fit with you. In my own experience, I’ve made my own opportunities just by saying yes to things and talking to people.”
In addition to starting his new job, Dawe will also begin studying for the CPA exam and is most looking forward to learning how businesses operate.
“I’m looking forward to the new opportunities and experiences, such as traveling around and learning more about how companies function or how they deal with problems and issues,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to have my own business, so I think it’s really cool to see how these businesses operate on a day to day basis and how they deal with challenges.”
