Does your organization have a drug-free safety program? If not, you should. The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) Drug-Free Safety Program offers a discount toward your annual workers’ compensation premium for implementing a drug-free safety program. Your program needs to promote occupational safety and health along with the use and misuse of alcohol and drugs in the workplace.
Employers can earn a discount between 4-7% for existing programs or ones that can be implemented easily.
Here are a few tips from employers who have successfully implemented drug-free safety programs:
- Think things through. It’s important to think ahead, define clear goals for the program and seek advice from other employers with experience.
- Involve employees. Showing employees that you value their input invests them in the program and helps to make it work.
- Have clear, written drug-free workplace policies and procedures that are applied consistently. With this in place, employees are more likely to support the program and trust that the employer will carry it out fairly.
