Scholarship winner ready to tackle the tax world

Sarah Robertson’s indirect path to the accounting profession hasn’t made her journey any less satisfying.

Sarah_Robertson“I finally was brave enough to do it,” she said about pursuing her master’s degree in accounting from Cleveland State University. “I’ve really enjoyed it since and it's definitely the right decision for me.”

Robertson attended Brigham Young University in Utah and earned a bachelor’s degree in home and family living. She said she became interested in accounting at age 21, and after moving to Ohio about six years ago when her husband found a job in Cleveland, she decided now was the time. She will graduate in May.

Robertson said she appreciates the problem solving and reliable answers that come from accounting, and enjoys learning tax rules.

Her passion for the profession did not go unnoticed by The Ohio CPA Foundation, who invited her as a guest to attend OSCPA’s Women, Wealth & Wellness Conference in June. While there, Robertson was surprised with a $500 scholarship from the Oswald Companies.

She said it was “really powerful” during the conference to be in a room full of professional women, and said she enjoyed the event and getting to know other students. One takeaway for her was the importance of self-promotion; she said she considers herself a shy person but came away inspired by speakers who emphasized the value of self-promotion.

After graduation she plans to earn her CPA and start working at the Cleveland EY office in the tax department and is looking forward to learning more about different areas of tax.

Winning the scholarship came as a surprise to her at the conference, and she said it will go a long way toward helping her fund her education.

“I really appreciate it so much,” she said. “I think it's so generous for them to donate that to students. And I'm so grateful to be able to use it to pay for my school.”
