Sales tax holiday this weekend

Written on Jul 27, 2023

Ohio will have a sales tax holiday from Friday, August 4, 2023, at 12 a.m. to Sunday, August 6, 2023, at 11:59 p.m.

During the holiday, the following items are exempt from sales and use tax:

  • An item of clothing priced at $75 or less

  • An item of school supplies priced at $20 or less

  • An item of school instructional material priced at $20 or less

  • Items used in a trade or business are not exempt under the sales tax holiday.

In August 2024 Ohio’s sales tax holiday is getting an upgrade. It will last longer than a weekend and will cover almost everything priced at $500 or less. Under Ohio’s new two-year budget, signed earlier this month, no sales tax will be charged on anything costing less than $500 starting on Aug. 1, 2024 and extending for a to-be-determined period. The exceptions are motor vehicles, watercraft, outboard motors, alcohol, tobacco products or vaping items, or medical marijuana.

Beyond 2024, similar expanded tax holidays will be held in years when there’s a budget surplus of at least $60 million, under H.B. 33 the new budget bill signed into law.
